Color Outside the Lines

They say stay inside of the lines, color inside the lines.

What if that’s a secret code to keep colored people inside of the “lines” of the system?

Systemic racism is coloring.

And I have colored inside the lines my whole life.

I was taught to in schools, on television shows, and in society.

I spent a lifetime taming all of my drawings in my coloring books to be perfectly colored in, without a freckle of color over the thick black lines.

Little did I know how much I could be limiting myself and missing by keeping my color inside the borders.

The picture can become more beautiful when you rid yourself of lines, boundaries, and guidelines and just let your crayon flow freely and fearlessly.
